Developing Great Performance
The world has been on a bull run over the past years, with the developing world being at the forefront registering huge growth in GDPs. However, the financial crises that shook this same world in September 2008, will have a significant impact on the way business will be conducted moving forward.
In a lot of the developing world, huge profits been gained from the surge in oil prices and other commodities which they produce. Many governments have realized the need for investing this wealth today for the security and prosperity of future generations. Whole new cities are being born and an enormous expansion is underway across places like China, Central Asia and the Middle East.
However, with so much money around and high growth occurring, a culture of inefficiency is becoming the norm. Businesses and governments in a lot of the developing world haven’t been as concerned with the actual results of their investments, but rather interested in the publicity and marketing of their plans, ideas, visions and forecasts. One thing that this year’s financial crises will help in, is provide a reality check for a lot of institutions. Performance will be demanded more and more as hard and simple results will need to be delivered.
We are very positive that this reality check will be beneficial, since as the saying goes “you need to change when you least need to”. A lot of the growth regions will continue to grow and will continue to have a considerable amount of wealth to invest, however, the way that this wealth will be spent will need to scrutinized, rationalized and put in the best investments. What this means for governments and businesses is that there should be a much greater focus on Performance Management. This would help organizations in clarifying their goals, communicating these goals clearly to managers, supervisors and staff, increasing motivation in the organization due to a fair reward system, and most importantly reach that organization’s potential.
We hope that this reality check will help us come back down to earth and focus on the fundamentals through well-implemented performance management systems, so that we insure that today’s wealth is used to create our next generation’s continued prosperity.
